Townsend Turf Services and History
For more than six decades Townsend Turf has been at the forefront of sport field and lawn development. Established in 1958 by Ernest Townsend as a residential lawn developer, Townsend Turf soon moved to constructing, renovating and maintaining council, stadium, school and club sports facilities across Auckland; earning a reputation of unmatched quality and precision. Ernest achieved this, in part, by developing some of the earliest turf-specific equipment, the Turf-Mate, moving away from agricultural machines of the day.
Bruce Townsend joined in the 80's and further established Townsend Turf's position as an authority in the industry with the following achievements:
First in New Zealand to introduce laser levelling
Working with NZSTI in developing sports field standards
Setting the standard for bowling green renovations and plinth design.
With a spirit of innovation, Townsend Turf has developed turf equipment to increase the standard and efficiency of work. Continually improved to adopt the latest technologies and designs, Townsend Turf still uses their levellers, undersowers and cultivating equipment.
Thornton Townsend is the third generation to be involved with the family business. With a Be(Hons) and a background in machine design and precision manufacturing, Thornton continues to build a reputation for quality, precision, and innovation and further raise the bar of equipment and practices in the sporting and levelling industry.
As a result of a long history and experience in the industry, Townsend Turf has become the trusted contractor for their integrity in delivering the best outcome for a wide range of sports and landscaping services in the Auckland and Upper North Island region.
